The entire province of Jinotega (Departamento de Jinotega) has approximately 177,600 inhabitants over an extension of 9,576 square kilometers, making Jinotega the fourth largest in Nicaragua (after RAAN, RAAS and Rio San Juan). Jinotega borders Honduras on the north; and it borders with Esteli and Matagalpa on the south.

Among the main reasons to visit Masaya is the active volcano with an ancient history of people fearing it (Masaya volcano used to be consider one of the few entrance to the actual Hell or Seol). At the handcraft market in Masaya, it is possible to find especially made pottery, articles in wood, leather, ceramics, hard stones and fabrics. The market is open every day of the year from dawn to early in the evening. Inside the market, you can find informal restaurants where you can taste typical dishes.

In Esteli, the climate is very pleasant; as it is located at about 800 meters above the sea level, and temperatures range 25 ° C to 28 ° C all year round, with a level of humidity lower compared to towns in the Pacific Ocean region.

In Esteli, the main economic activities are livestock and agriculture. Esteli coffee and tobacco are internationally known.

Sites of Interest

Natural protected forest at La Virgen, just 20 km from Pueblo Nuevo, where are fossils of birds and other animals, petroglyphs of 30,000 years old considered the oldest evidence of human existence in Central America. La Virgen is also known for the existence of organic coffee farms.

Protected Area Tisey-Estanzuela, only 12Km from the city of Estelí. Estanzuela is the hightest point for a river in Nicaragua, between 700 – 1500 meters above sea level. The flora and fauna are diverse, with about 120 species, many of which are at high risk of extinction. Around these areas there are also farms that provide lodging. If you stay here, you can appreciate the beauty of the region as well as outdoor activities like camping, horseback riding, hiking, enjoying the fruits and cheeses made by hand.

There is a Natural Reserve with accommodation where you can stay and enjoy the exotic nature tours and panoramic views, as well as majestic waterfalls.  In Estelí you can enjoy pleasant nights in different places where local groups perform live music.
